NEWS AND UPDATES
The Arc Macon and ArtSpace Macon collaboration creates opportunities for artists with disabilities to build meaningful connections, earn income, and contribute to Macon's creative community.
MACON, GA | October 23, 2026 – Creative Pathways, an initiative developed through collaboration between The Arc Macon and ArtSpace Macon, is preparing for a new chapter as it works toward becoming an independent nonprofit organization. Supporting artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities and neurodivergent artists, Creative Pathways brings together artistic expression, meaningful relationships, and economic opportunities.
What began as occasional art classes has grown into regular studio sessions, exhibitions, and community markets where artists can develop their talents, build relationships, and sell their original work. Recently, 15 participating artists sold their artwork and earned income from their creative contributions, with work featured at venues including the Macon Arts Alliance gallery in downtown Macon.
For Creative Pathways artist Anna Marie Jackson, selling her first piece of artwork was an unforgettable experience. In an August 2026 interview with 41NBC, Jackson shared her excitement, saying, "I was happy. I was amazed. I was jumping up and down." Jackson also described how creating art brings her comfort during difficult or lonely moments.
These experiences reflect a broader understanding of inclusion, one that extends beyond access to traditional disability services to creating opportunities for connection, contribution, and belonging. Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has emphasized the importance of social connection to physical and mental well-being, including the health consequences of loneliness and isolation. Creative Pathways puts these principles into practice by bringing people together through shared creative interests and meaningful experiences.
"Creative Pathways is about so much more than creating art. It's about people having opportunities to discover and pursue their interests, build meaningful relationships, and be recognized for what they contribute to our community," said Katrina Pirkle, President and CEO of The Arc Macon. "Seeing these artists develop their own creative identities, sell their work, and form genuine connections is exactly the kind of inclusion we want to see throughout our community."
In the August 41NBC interview, Casie Trace, Owner of ArtSpace Macon, also highlighted the confidence artists have developed as the initiative has expanded to include regular studio opportunities, exhibitions, and markets.
As Creative Pathways looks toward the future, work is underway to establish the initiative as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This transition will create opportunities to expand community collaborations and establish a sustainable foundation for continued growth. ArtSpace Macon's planned relocation from Ingleside to a larger, accessible downtown studio also offers opportunities for greater visibility and community engagement.
For The Arc Macon, Creative Pathways demonstrates how collaboration with local businesses and community organizations can create meaningful opportunities beyond traditional disability services. As the initiative enters its next chapter, its mission remains rooted in a simple but powerful idea: everyone deserves opportunities to create, connect, contribute, and belong.
